I’ve been on the job hunt for about six months now, and it’s been really tough. I’m 21 and just starting college, but I’ve had a hard time finding a job since I quit my last position as a line cook after nine months. The experience was so stressful and damaging to my mental health that I never want to work in a restaurant again. I struggled with the job, made a lot of mistakes, and faced harassment that really affected my performance. Now, it’s been two years since I’ve had a steady job, and I’m unsure how to explain my employment gap. I usually just say I had health issues that are now resolved, but I worry that might not be the best approach. I updated my resume to include some volunteer work from high school, and I always send a cover letter, but I’m not confident in my writing skills and wonder if that’s hurting my chances. I’d prefer part-time work to balance with my college schedule, but I’ve been so desperate that I’ve told employers I could do full-time. I live about 20 miles from a World Cup stadium, which I hope will create more job opportunities, but commuting is a challenge. I can take public transport, but it’s unreliable and stressful. I’ve considered applying for jobs at the nearby mall since it’s busy right now, and that might be a good option. I’m feeling pretty hopeless and would appreciate any advice or encouragement. It’s hard to stay motivated when it feels like I’m not making any progress.

I’m currently feeling lost in my job search. I have a strong interest in the criminal justice field, particularly in roles related to detective work or family and victim support. However, I’m struggling to figure out how to find the right opportunities since I’m not entirely sure what specific positions to look for. I’m eager to attend a job fair to explore options, but unfortunately, there aren’t any scheduled near me for several months. I’m really tired of endlessly scrolling through job listings on Indeed and seeing the same postings repeatedly. Any advice on how to navigate this uncertainty would be greatly appreciated!

I received a meeting invite for an interactive session with my Business Unit Head, and there are 32 other people included in the invite. The HR team is the one organizing this meeting. I'm starting to feel anxious about it, as it seems like a potential sign of layoffs. The comments from others I've spoken to suggest that they share my concerns. I'm trying to prepare myself for whatever news might come out of this meeting.

I worked as a server at a restaurant from May 16 to May 30, totaling 75 hours, but I have yet to receive an official paycheck. I was able to take home cash tips, but all my credit card tips were supposed to go on my paycheck. The restaurant closed down on June 3, and I was told payments would be sent via Zelle once everything was settled. I did receive $168.64 through Zelle on June 3, but since then, I haven't seen any other payments. I'm owed over $600 in hourly wages and hundreds more in credit card tips. I've tried reaching out to the owner, but I haven't gotten any response. I've documented all my hours and tips, and I've submitted an inquiry to my state's Department of Labor to see if there's a case, but I've heard that since the restaurant has closed, I might not see that money at all.

I recently had a pretty rough experience at my job at a bagel chain where I've been working since June 20th. I'm 16 and was initially excited about my first job, especially since the pay was decent at $11/hour plus tips. However, things took a turn right from the beginning. I had specifically asked my boss, a 41-year-old woman, for a dishwashing position because I work better in silence, but on my first day, she had me working the slicer, which is illegal for minors. I felt uncomfortable from the start, especially when I learned about her criminal history, which includes multiple felonies like identity fraud. During my shifts, I was asked to do a side job that turned out to be power washing at a stranger's house, and I was left alone to operate dangerous equipment without proper supervision. It was a bizarre and unsafe situation. When I returned to the restaurant, I overheard my boss talking negatively about me to her husband, saying I wasn't getting my job done and even suggested not giving me tips. This was really disheartening, especially since I know I was working hard and doing my best. To top it off, there were health violations at the store, and I suspect some shady financial practices happening with the cash register. Now, I'm feeling really uneasy about continuing at this job. I’m torn because I don’t want to quit and risk not getting paid for the hours I’ve worked, but I also don’t want to be in such a sketchy environment. I’m looking for advice on what to do next.

Today, I faced a challenging situation at my current job. Just before I was about to clock in, one of my immediate supervisors accused me of stealing. I was taken aback and asked for clarification, but he repeated the accusation. This really threw me off, and I realized I couldn't focus on my work in that state of mind. I decided to report the incident and left the workplace. This isn't the first time I've had a negative encounter with this boss, and I feel like it needs to be the last. Now, I'm in the process of searching for new job opportunities while also figuring out if I qualify for unemployment benefits. To be honest, I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed and emotional about the whole situation. I know I need to pull myself together, but it's tough right now. I appreciate any advice or support as I navigate this job search and deal with the fallout from today.

I was laid off from my high-paying corporate job earlier this year, and after taking some time off to regroup, I recently started applying for new positions. I've been fortunate to land a few interviews, but I'm noticing that most of the roles come with a significant pay cut—ranging from 20% to 60%—along with reduced benefits like less PTO and lower 401K contributions. While I'm open to a pay cut if it leads to a better work-life balance and a less stressful job, I would prefer to maintain a decent level of compensation. I'm in a relatively stable financial situation thanks to my savings, so I'm not desperate for a new role, but I also can't afford to retire just yet. I've seen others in similar positions after being let go from high-paying jobs in finance, tech, and sales, and I'm curious about how they're navigating this challenging job market. Some people I've talked to are taking on gig work just to appear employed, while others are still applying for full-time roles similar to what they had before, but with little success. I had hoped for a smoother transition, but this experience has been frustrating and not at all what I envisioned for my career at this stage.

I recently found myself laid off from my job at Oracle, and it's been a tough time trying to figure out how to manage my finances, especially with my home loan EMIs. I’ve been reaching out to others in similar situations to see how they’re coping. Many have shared their strategies, like relying on savings they built up during previous economic downturns or utilizing public assistance programs. Personally, I’m grateful to have my mum by my side. We purchased our house together in 2024 in the Los Angeles county area, and living with my parents has been a blessing. My mum's government nursing retirement pension is currently covering half of our mortgage, which gives me some breathing room while I search for a new job. It’s a relief to have this backup plan in place, something we discussed when we bought the house. I hope to find work soon, but for now, we’re managing as best as we can.

I'm currently looking for updates on layoffs at Centene, where I work in the Medicaid call center. I'm concerned about how potential layoffs might impact our team and the services we provide. If anyone has insights or information about the situation, I would really appreciate it.

Today, I find myself reflecting on the grim reality of layoffs at my company in the Food and Production sector. We started with 700 employees, but the waves of layoffs have been relentless. The first wave took 5 people, then 50, and now we're down to 400. It feels like the storm is only getting stronger, and I can't shake the feeling that my time is coming soon. I’ve always been an energetic and friendly person, but the constant uncertainty has really drained my spirits. It's hard to interact with others when I feel this weight on my shoulders. I’m in my late 30s, and starting over seems more daunting than ever. As I watch the world around me, it’s disheartening to think about the wealth disparity and the chaos happening globally while I worry about becoming homeless and starving. Sometimes, the thought of escaping it all feels tempting. I wish I could offer encouragement to others facing similar struggles, but even the simple act of breathing feels like a challenge right now. I’m holding back tears as I confront these difficulties head-on. Thank you for listening to my thoughts.

I've been feeling overwhelmed navigating the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) system after being laid off around June 1. I've been certifying my unemployment every two weeks and completing my work searches as required, but I misunderstood a key requirement regarding Michigan Works! registration. I thought creating an account online was sufficient, but I later learned that I needed to register in person at the Michigan Works office as well. After I received a Fact Finding questionnaire from UIA asking for proof of my registration, I rushed to complete the in-person requirement, but I was already two weeks past the deadline. On June 18, UIA issued a determination (labeled Issued 1), and I filed a protest explaining my misunderstanding. Now, on June 29, my protest status changed to Issued 2, but I haven't received any determination letter or explanation for this change. I've tried calling UIA multiple times, but I keep getting the busy signal due to high call volume. Additionally, I have an alert about needing to reopen my claim, but I'm hesitant to do that as I fear it might complicate my protest or appeal. As of today, I still haven't received any unemployment benefits, and I'm worried that my mistake could jeopardize my eligibility. If anyone has gone through something similar or has advice, I would really appreciate it.

I was laid off from my tech job a few weeks ago, and it's been a tough journey. After posting a comment seeking support, I received a lot of direct messages from others in similar situations. This motivated me to think about creating a resource or platform that could help us feel more supported during this challenging time. I'm reaching out to the community to ask what specific types of support you all are looking for. It would mean a lot to me to build something that truly benefits everyone going through this experience. Thank you for any feedback!

I just got laid off during my probation period at a company where I was interning. Initially, everything seemed to be going well, but I was also preparing for my upcoming placements at home, which meant I wasn't able to dedicate as much time to my internship work. I thought I was managing both responsibilities adequately until I had a conversation with my supervisor. They informed me that they felt I wasn't a good cultural fit for the company and mentioned a perceived lack of dedication on my part. This left me questioning whether it was my intelligence or just bad luck that led to this outcome. It's frustrating to hear 'cultural fit' as a reason, as it feels like a vague excuse.

I just had a really frustrating experience with my boss at my company where I've worked for the past six years. After not receiving my paycheck for an entire month, I finally decided to quit because I need to find a way to support myself. I reached out multiple times during that month, but my boss kept promising payment without ever following through. When I told him I was leaving, he accused me of threatening him, which was completely absurd. I feel like they don't care about their employees at all. Now I'm debating whether to respond to him or just cut all ties with the company and move on. I've been advised to report the missing wages to the Department of Labor, and I’m considering that as my next step. It’s just disheartening to see how some employers can treat their staff.

I’m feeling pretty lost right now in my career journey. I graduated with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Computer Science two years ago, but I’ve had no luck landing a job in the tech industry. Despite having a decent GPA, I’ve been ghosted or rejected from every application I’ve submitted. Currently, I’m working full-time as a barista just to make ends meet. This Fall, I’m going back to school for another master’s degree, this time in Analytics, in hopes of improving my prospects. I plan to pursue an internship while studying, although I’m not quite sure how I’ll manage that yet. I’m reaching out for advice on how to transition back into tech as a software engineer or data analyst, especially with my resume mostly filled with academic projects and no real-world experience. I know I could have tried harder to secure a job after graduation, and I feel a bit ashamed about it. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I’m currently working in a corporate HR outsourcing company, and I’m feeling really overwhelmed about my job situation. Over the past few months, my performance has been declining, and my manager has already warned me that my upcoming performance review won’t be good. I know I’m lacking some of the basic competencies expected for my role, and there’s a real chance I could get fired. What’s really bothering me isn’t just the possibility of losing my job, but the fear of what my coworkers will think. I’ve struggled with mental health issues for a long time, and criticism or judgment really affects me. I don’t even particularly like this job; it doesn’t pay well, and the company is moving towards replacing many roles with AI. I had actually planned to leave in a couple of months to go to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa, so I’m not too concerned about the job itself. However, the thought of being fired makes me feel ashamed. I dread the idea of having that conversation, of walking out and knowing everyone will see me as a failure. This fear has made me feel trapped, and at times, it has led to self-harming behaviors. I’m reaching out to see if anyone else has felt this way—more scared of the shame and judgment from others than the actual job loss. It’s a tough place to be.

I've been working as a manager at a retail store for the past four years, and honestly, I'm really unhappy with how things are going. The company has changed direction a lot, and I feel disrespected, especially since I've been the longest-tenured employee at my location. I've started to feel like I might get pushed out or even fired for no good reason, despite always being on time and doing my job well. Since the beginning of the year, I've been applying for new jobs and finally landed an interview with a company that seems to align with my values. The only downside is that it comes with a potential $40,000 pay cut. My mom is really concerned about this decision, telling me I'm going backwards in life. I understand her worries, especially since I live at home and have a car payment of $715 a month, which is my only major expense aside from student loans while I finish my degree in computer science. I see this new job as a way to escape the negativity of my current workplace and to bridge the gap until I can transition into my new career. However, the tension with my mom has made things difficult, and we aren't really speaking at the moment. I just want to find a place where I feel respected and valued.

I have been working in front of house/customer service roles for the past 10 years, and I'm excited to share that I have a position lined up in my dream career starting at the end of this year. However, I'm currently feeling extremely frustrated with my job and want to quit right now. I still have two months to go, and I'm looking for temporary job options that don't involve heavy customer service, are easy to obtain, and can be left without much hassle. I'm reaching out to see if anyone has suggestions for jobs that fit this criteria.

I was laid off this morning for the second time after just 9 months at my new job in marketing. I'm feeling really down about it. After losing my first job at a marketing agency back in July 2025, I was thrilled to land a new position at another agency in October 2025, where I was doing similar work but with a better salary. The team was amazing, and I felt like I was making great contributions, especially after receiving positive feedback in my recent performance review. However, today at 9:30 AM, I was unexpectedly pulled into a meeting with HR and my two direct bosses. In just four minutes, I was informed that I was laid off, with no clear explanation given. I feel completely blindsided and overwhelmed with sadness and fear. I think I might be the only one laid off, which makes it even harder to process. The job market seems really tough right now, and I'm scared about having to search for a new job again so soon. I have a supportive network of family and friends, but right now, I just want to take a break and focus on my hobbies for the rest of the day. I know I need to get back out there eventually, but it's hard to shake off this feeling of uncertainty. Thanks for reading.

After my recent layoff from a customer success role at a B2B software company, I realized that my first instinct was to jump onto LinkedIn and start applying for every job I could find. However, I took a step back and decided to follow a more structured approach to protect myself and my future opportunities. First, I gathered all the important documents I had access to, including my offer letter, separation agreement, severance terms, and any relevant performance reviews. I made sure to note down critical dates, such as my last working day, when my benefits would end, and deadlines for severance and unemployment eligibility. I also reminded myself not to rush into signing the severance agreement without fully understanding it. I read it once, set it aside, and then reviewed it again to ensure I wasn't missing anything that could affect my future, like non-compete clauses or unpaid wages. As soon as I could, I filed for unemployment benefits, knowing that any delays could cost me valuable time and resources. To manage my finances during this transition, I created a 30-day cash map to outline my essential expenses and identify areas where I could cut back. I reached out to a couple of former colleagues to ask if they would be comfortable serving as references while our relationships were still fresh. Additionally, I crafted a clear target sentence for my job search to help narrow down my focus: "I am looking for customer success roles at B2B software companies where my support and onboarding experience is useful." Instead of creating multiple tailored resumes right away, I focused on building a solid base resume first, which I could then adjust for specific roles. I learned that while the job search is important, the first day after a layoff is crucial for ensuring I don't lose options or make hasty decisions.
