I have nearly 10 years of experience in the utility industry, including over 5 years focused on large infrastructure projects. Recently, I've applied to about a dozen positions at Southern California Edison (SCE) where I met the minimum qualifications, but I haven't received any responses, recruiter screens, or interview invitations. I'm trying to understand how crucial the "preferred qualifications" are in SCE's hiring process. Specifically, if a job listing prefers candidates with experience in SCE-specific systems, electric distribution, or particular certifications, do I stand a chance as an external candidate without those preferences? I'm looking to be more selective in my applications moving forward, rather than just applying based on the minimum qualifications.

I have been working since I was 12 years old, and now in my 50s, I find myself facing a year-long gap in employment. This situation has been challenging, and I’m struggling to navigate the job market after such a long break. I’m concerned about how potential employers will view this gap and what steps I can take to make myself more attractive as a candidate. I’m looking for advice on how to explain this gap in interviews and any strategies for reintegrating into the workforce.
