I’m currently in a tough spot after being temporarily laid off from my job in Oregon. Last week, due to staff shortages from vacations, I was asked to come in and help out. I followed the rules and accepted the work, but now I’ve run into an issue with my unemployment claim because I ended up with what they call "excess earnings." This means I have to re-appeal my unemployment benefits, which feels frustrating because it’s essentially the same process I went through when I first applied. My main concern right now is whether I will still receive my unemployment payments for this week and the next, or if I have to wait for the entire re-appeal process to be completed, which could mean missing out on two weeks of pay. I’m just trying to navigate this situation and understand what my next steps should be.

I recently interviewed for a Realty Specialist position with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Seattle. The interview was this past Tuesday, and I'm still waiting to hear back about whether I've been selected. I understand that the federal hiring process can be slow, possibly taking 3-4 months before a start date, if I even receive an offer. In the meantime, I've received a job offer from a private sector company in Florida, which requires me to make a decision in about three weeks. This role involves flying out for a shadowing experience and a final interview, with a potential start date in late September. My ultimate goal is to work in the government, and the position with USACE seems like a great opportunity to get my foot in the door, especially with the fellows program they offer. I'm torn between accepting the private sector job now or holding out for the federal position. If I do take the private sector job and later receive an offer from USACE, is it acceptable to resign from the private job? I want to ensure I don't burn any bridges or jeopardize my chances with the federal job. Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did it turn out for you?

I'm feeling really frustrated with my job search. I've been applying to jobs since I was 16, and now at 20, I've had a total of 7 interviews but haven't landed a single offer. I've applied everywhere from retail positions to gas stations, but it seems like my lack of experience is holding me back. My parents keep telling me to 'apply myself harder,' but I'm starting to feel lost. I appreciate the suggestions from others, and I'm considering ways to improve my marketability, like volunteering or taking classes. It's just disheartening to see so many people with jobs when I can't even get my foot in the door.

I'm currently exploring AI job application tools to streamline my job search. I've heard about Tsenta and similar platforms that claim to automatically find relevant jobs, tailor my CV and cover letter for each application, and submit them on my behalf. I'm particularly interested in whether Tsenta truly personalizes applications or if it just sends out a generic CV for every job. If anyone has experience with Tsenta or knows of better tools for tech jobs in the UK, I'd really appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance!

I just started a new job after being laid off, and I'm really struggling with imposter syndrome. After ten years of stability, the layoff was a huge shock, and while I'm grateful to have found a new role in this tough job market, I'm terrified of failing despite my past successes. I don’t have a full degree, but I’ve always managed to secure great positions through hard work and a strong work ethic. Now, I find myself in a team where most of my colleagues are younger and have degrees, while I bring a wealth of hands-on experience. My manager hired me for my background and personality, but the team dynamic has triggered some serious self-doubt. Onboarding is done by just one person, who is fantastic, but since he’s close to management, I worry about looking foolish based on his feedback. It's also pretty lonely; with split departments and a hybrid schedule, I haven’t had much opportunity to build relationships with anyone my age. I really need advice on how to navigate this situation and quiet my inner critic, reminding myself that my experience still holds value.

I'm 19 and currently facing some tough challenges, including being homeless and living with a friend. I'm really eager to find a remote job, but I feel completely stuck. My small town doesn't offer many opportunities, and I can't afford a vehicle to commute to work. I've been searching online for remote jobs, but most of what I find seems to be scams or bot accounts. I graduated high school but didn't pursue a college degree, and I'm feeling lost about how to move forward. If anyone has advice on how to land a remote job or any resources I could use, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm just looking to get my life back on track and live more normally. Thank you for any help!

I recently started my job hunting journey and it's been quite the experience. I’ve been updating my resume and trying to tailor it for different roles. One of the things I’ve noticed is the importance of including my height in the summary section, as it seems to be a common topic of discussion among recruiters. I even joked with a friend about replacing my name on my resume with 'Sir Cumference' to see if that would get a laugh during interviews. Overall, I'm trying to stay positive and keep my sense of humor while navigating this process.

I recently faced another setback in my job search after failing yet another interview. I felt like I performed well throughout the process, but ultimately, I was rejected. The only explanation I can come up with is my status as a fresher. I've been trying to land a tech job for what feels like forever, but success continues to elude me. The burnout from this ongoing struggle is overwhelming; I find myself just staring at the wall all day, feeling defeated. It's frustrating to see job postings asking for 0-1 year of experience, only to find that they end up hiring candidates with three years or more. I'm really tired of this cycle.

Today, I had a frustrating conversation with a friend about the job market. I expressed my concerns about how difficult the job hunt has been for me lately, but she insisted that there are more jobs than people looking for work. It’s hard to understand her perspective since she has been in the same job for over 20 years and seems completely disconnected from the current reality. I mentioned a mutual friend who applied to 50-60 positions without hearing back, but that didn’t seem to sway her opinion. I feel like people who are currently employed just don’t grasp how tough it is out here for those of us searching for jobs. It’s like they’re living in a different world where the job market is thriving, while I see the rising unemployment numbers and the countless rejections piling up. I wish she could experience the job search process firsthand to understand the challenges we face. It’s disheartening to feel gaslit about the state of the job market when I know so many others are struggling too.

I was laid off from Meta in May, part of a massive reduction that affected around 8,000 employees. While I can't pinpoint the exact reasons for my layoff, I've been following a troubling story involving a lawsuit from 26 former employees. They allege that Meta used an internal AI tool called Checkpoint to track employee performance and make layoff decisions, which reportedly targeted individuals on protected medical leave disproportionately. This has been covered by several media outlets, and despite the bias claims, a judge has allowed the layoffs to proceed. I also learned more about how the layoffs were tied to operations within the company. Meta had three teams managing supplier contracts and invoice processing, which were essential for their rapid scaling in AI investments and new factory setups. The complexity of the supply chain was immense, and leadership decided to cut the team down to a fifth of its original size, even as the business was growing significantly. An AI agent company took over many of the tasks that these employees were handling, and while some displaced workers found new roles through a service called Freehand, it raises concerns about how AI-driven restructuring might be a trend across the industry. I'm curious if others are seeing similar patterns in their layoffs and if there's any way for those of us affected to get clarity on how automation played a role in our situations, since companies aren't forthcoming with this information.

I recently faced a significant change in my employment situation. My current employer is ending our positions, but they negotiated a job offer for me through a contracting company that offers similar pay. The new role includes the same rate of accrued PTO for one year, but after that, it drops to 15 days. Given that I have 15 years of tenure and would have been accruing 30 days of PTO if my job hadn't been impacted, I'm feeling uncertain. I'm concerned about whether refusing this offer would affect my eligibility for unemployment benefits, especially with such a substantial reduction in PTO. I've received advice suggesting that since the change in PTO would only happen after a year, it wouldn't qualify me for unemployment benefits if I decline the offer. I'm weighing my options and considering whether it's worth accepting this position while I continue my job search.

I'm currently in the job application process for a teaching position with CPS, and I've hit a bit of a snag regarding references. The hiring manager has specifically requested a reference from a principal, assistant principal, or someone from the HR department at the school district where I worked as a substitute teacher last year. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my role, I don't have any direct relationships with the administration since I was constantly moving between different campuses and primarily interacting with students. I spent the year as a substitute teacher across a large school district, which made it difficult to develop the kind of rapport needed for a reference from an administrator. I was also a full-time student, which limited my ability to take on long-term assignments that might have allowed me to build those relationships. The HR department has stated they can't provide a reference letter since they had minimal interaction with me after my initial hiring. However, I do have a teacher who I frequently substituted for, and she is willing to provide a reference. I'm considering asking the CPS hiring manager if this would be acceptable instead of the requested principal reference. I plan to accompany her reference with my job offer letter and any proof of employment they might need. I'm also providing supervisor references from my previous jobs, which the hiring manager requested. I'm just unsure how to approach the hiring manager about the teacher's reference and if there's anything specific I should avoid doing in this situation.

I recently graduated with a degree in fashion merchandising and have spent the last five years working as a buyer in a buy/sell/trade secondhand fashion store. Now, I'm trying to break into corporate fashion buying, but it's been tough. I've applied to numerous assistant buyer positions on job boards like Indeed and LinkedIn, but I've only received one interview, and it felt like the interviewer didn't value my experience. I think my lack of a formal internship in corporate buying and no direct corporate experience is holding me back. I'm looking for advice on how to get my foot in the door and any additional job search platforms or skills I should focus on. I'm based in the Southern California/LA area, so if anyone has insights or tips, I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm a 25-year-old mechanical design engineer with four years of experience, currently working at my second company for the past three years. Recently, my company entered a joint venture, and there have been layoffs happening regionally for about four months. My region had been untouched until now, but I'm feeling anxious as my N+2 manager is visiting us next week without a clear reason. I have a strong feeling that the whole team might be laid off. I've received two awards and positive feedback from my colleagues, so I know I do my job well, but the uncertainty is overwhelming. The work has slowed down, and I've been applying for jobs but only received rejections so far. I'm scared that if I lose my job, I might have to move back in with my parents and feel like a burden to them. I'm trying to stay proactive by applying for jobs and upskilling, but the anxiety is tough to manage. I just needed to vent and seek any advice on what I should do next.

I am reaching out to see if there are any experienced PMs at Google who could provide guidance or mentorship before my interview. Any advice, frameworks, or resources you could share would be immensely helpful to me during this crucial time.
